In an interview with Euronews Albania, criminology professor Ervin Karamuço spoke behind the scenes of the secret operation that led to the capture of the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) cartel, revealing details about how the infiltration and cooperation with American intelligence were carried out.
According to Karamuço, the cartel boss, who had managed to escape justice for years, was betrayed by a mistake in his personal life. He explained that a woman, suspected of being an undercover DEA agent, had sent him a simple text message with the text “Come on,” leading him out of his hideout in a mountainous area near Guadalajara. Despite secret tunnels built for escape, he was arrested while trying to leave with several bodyguards.
Karamuço also revealed harsh methods that the cartel used to identify spies. According to him, young suspects were searched in brutal ways, including using car batteries to detect hidden tracking devices on their bodies.
The cartel, according to him, functioned as a paramilitary structure with over 20,000 members, armored vehicles and organized training camps, while the operation to capture the leader was kept in complete secrecy and was carried out with air support through drones and specialized vehicles.
Speaking about the future of the criminal organization, Karamuço predicted the possibility of an internal war for control of the cartel or its dissolution, while emphasizing that such organizations are increasingly being treated as terrorist groups.
Asked about the involvement of Albanians in the highest levels of these cartels, he stated that there is no Albanian presence in the leadership domes, while Albanians can only appear as collaborators at lower levels.
