What Is a Fallstreak Hole?

Fallstreak hole (also called a “hole-punch cloud”) forms in altocumulus or cirrocumulus clouds.

These clouds often contain supercooled water droplets—liquid water that remains unfrozen below 0°C.

When something triggers freezing (like passing aircraft or natural disturbances), the droplets crystallize into ice.

The ice crystals fall, leaving a circular or oval gap that looks like the sky has torn open.
