Nicole Chamberlain was driving her bus route in Waukesha, Wisconsin, when she noticed two children walking through the snow without coats. The temperature was just 18 degrees. The younger child was only 2 years old and wore a T shirt, diaper, and boots. Her 6 year old brother was also badly underdressed for the freezing weather. “Whoa! Those kids are out without any clothes on!” Chamberlain said. The children were walking toward a busy intersection, and Chamberlain knew she needed to stop. “Neither one of them had a coat on, and they were headed towards a busy intersection,” she said. “I knew right away I had to pull over and help them.” She brought the children onto the warm bus and placed her coat over the younger girl’s legs. When Chamberlain asked what they were doing outside, the children said they were looking for their grandmother. “We’re gonna figure it out,” she told them. “We’ll keep you warm on the bus, OK?” Chamberlain called police, who helped locate the children’s grandmother. She explained that she had briefly gone into the basement before the children left the house. Police said no charges were filed or recommended. For Chamberlain, stopping to help was simply what she hoped another person would do for her own children. “If that were to happen to my children, I would hope that there would be somebody, a decent human being, that would stop and help my kids,” she said.
