Here are the causes of sleeping with one...See more

Waking up with a swollen or painful lip can be surprising, especially when there was no obvious problem the night before. In many cases, lip swelling can have simple causes, but sometimes it may be a sign that needs medical attention.

1. An allergic reaction

Certain foods, lip products, toothpaste, cosmetics, or medications can trigger irritation or an allergic reaction, causing the lips to become swollen, red, or itchy.

2. A cold sore

Cold sores can begin with tingling, burning, or tenderness before small fluid-filled blisters appear. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus and can recur from time to time.

3. A pimple or blocked skin gland

The skin around the lips contains glands and hair follicles that can become blocked or inflamed, producing a small painful bump.

4. Insect bites

A bite during the night can cause localized swelling, redness, and itching around the lips.

5. Irritation or minor injury

Biting the lip, rubbing it against a pillow, or using an irritating product can sometimes lead to temporary swelling.

When should you seek medical help?

If lip swelling develops suddenly and is accompanied by difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, dizziness, or trouble swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately. If the swelling is severe, keeps getting worse, or does not improve, it is also a good idea to speak with a healthcare professional.

Important: A photo alone cannot determine the exact cause of a swollen lip. Different conditions can look similar, so persistent or worsening symptoms should be checked by a medical professional.
