Long before recycling became part of our everyday lives, the rag-and-bone man was a familiar sight on the streets of Britain. With his horse-drawn cart, he would travel from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, collecting old clothes, rags, bones, metal and other unwanted household items.
For many families, these men played an important role. Nothing was simply thrown away if it could be reused or sold. Old materials were collected, sorted and given a new purpose. In return, the rag-and-bone man might offer a small amount of money or another useful item.
The photograph above captures a beautiful moment from that bygone era: a man and a woman sitting on their cart outside a “VG Stores”, surrounded by the ordinary sights of everyday life.
