The Road That Time Forgot

 

Troy Hill on the North Side is one of Pittsburgh's best kept secrets and one of its oldest German Catholic neighborhoods, perched on a steep ridge above the Allegheny River with a view of downtown Pittsburgh that residents have been looking at since before the Civil War.

German Catholic families built Most Holy Name parish on Harpster Street and organized their community around the steep hillside streets with the same determination that every Pittsburgh immigrant community brought to the task of making a foreign city feel like home.

Troy Hill never grew large enough to become famous. It grew deep enough to last.

The neighborhood is still there. The view is still extraordinary. Most Pittsburgh residents have never been up the hill to see it.
