A strange-looking object washed up on a beach and quickly became the subject of online speculation.

At first glance, it looked almost unreal. Its unusual texture and repeating patterns made some people compare it to rows of teeth, claws, or even something mechanical.

The photograph was enough to make people wonder: What could possibly be hiding beneath the surface of the ocean?

The Mystery Creature Was Actually a Chiton

The unusual object was identified as the underside of a chiton, a type of marine mollusk that commonly lives around rocky coastal areas.

From above, a chiton doesn’t look particularly frightening. Its body is protected by eight overlapping shell plates, giving it a distinctive armored appearance.

But turning one over reveals a completely different side.

The underside contains a muscular foot that helps the animal grip tightly to rocks. Its structures can look surprisingly alien when viewed up close.
