A terrifying flash flood in India's mountainous Uttarakhand state has been captured on video, showing a powerful torrent of muddy water ripping a metal bridge away in a matter of seconds.
The dramatic incident unfolded in Niti Valley on Monday evening, August 10, after heavy and persistent rainfall caused water levels to rise rapidly across the region.
Footage from the scene shows an enormous rush of muddy water charging through the valley.
The force of the floodwater was so powerful that the bridge appeared to have almost no chance of remaining in place.
Within moments, the structure was torn away from the adjoining road and carried downstream along with rocks, mud and other debris.
And perhaps the most frightening detail is what happened just before the bridge disappeared.
🌊 The Bridge Was Swept Away
The bridge was reportedly a Bailey-type structure crossing the Tamak drain.
As the water surged through the valley, the normally manageable waterway became a powerful torrent.
The floodwater slammed into the bridge from below and around its structure.
Video shows the water forcing its way through the gaps before the bridge was eventually ripped from its connection to the road.
The metal structure was then carried away by the flood as though it weighed almost nothing.
Large rocks and other debris were also being pushed downstream by the force of the water.
For anyone watching from nearby, the scene would have been terrifying.
🚨 Two Vehicles Nearly Faced Disaster
Perhaps the most remarkable part of the incident is that vehicles had reportedly been approaching the bridge shortly before it was destroyed.
A truck and an SUV were able to turn away from the area just in time.
Had they continued onto the bridge, the outcome could have been dramatically different.
