A wildfire burning near Interstate 5 has grown to an estimated 550 acres, bringing firefighters from across Southern Oregon together in an aggressive effort to slow the flames and protect nearby communities.
The Fielder Mountain Fire, which began Thursday afternoon near Rogue River, remained 0% contained Friday morning, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry.
Despite the difficult conditions, firefighters made significant progress overnight, completing fireline around approximately
70% of the blaze as crews worked through the night with hand crews, bulldozers and hose lines.
Fire officials are now preparing for another challenging day as warm and gusty weather is expected to return.
The fire has already prompted Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 evacuation notices in portions of Jackson and Josephine counties.
And with an Incident Management Team now taking command, officials are treating the fire as a complex incident requiring a major coordinated response.
