A family portrait that defies the laws of time

At first glance, nothing distinguished this photograph from other old pictures: a family posing demurely in front of a red brick wall , parents and children dressed in their Sunday best. The style of dress betrayed a bygone era, that of the early days of photography. But the handwritten inscription on the back would change everything: "1820".

Problem: Photography was officially invented in 1826. How could this image have existed?

The inexplicable appearance

Driven by curiosity, experts in the restoration of historical photographs examined the document. Modern technologies revealed unexpected details. And there, emerging from the shadows, a ghostly face was clearly visible behind the group of children.

Neither a paper defect nor an optical illusion. This enigmatic silhouette did not appear on any original negative. Yet, it seemed to be an integral part of the composition.
